What if I told you that your iced latte can get better as it melts. Impossible? Oh no, it’s possible. This coffee cubed iced latte is just that. A iced latte created from strongly brewed coffee ice cubes topped with hot steamed milk. It has the frothy, creamy consistency that you know and love from a hot latte, but is cool and refreshing, perfect for summer.
Truth be told, I am not a fan of iced coffee beverages. 90% of the time I will order a hot coffee or latte no matter what time of the year it is. What is that rare 10% time that I do order iced? This week when it hit 99° degrees (feels like 105°). Determined to have a creamy frothy latte, while not being completly insane and actually drink a hot drink in this blazing heat i found my solution.
Before I break this down, I can already anticipate the questions.
If this is a latte do the ice cubes need to be espresso? No. Do they need to be cold brew? Not necessarily, while cold brew is a great option, strongly brewed coffee works just fine. I used a french press to brew the coffee for these cubes. Not only was I able to control how strong the coffee was but more coffee=more cubes.
What You’ll Need
Coffee Beans / Grounds – Please get good beans, it makes a world’s difference. I personally grind my beans at home, however, I understand that not everyone has a grinder. If you can’t grind them at home get good coffee grinds pre-grounded for a french press (course).
French Press– As I said above you do not need to make cold brew, really strong coffee will be sufficient here. I used a french press and brewed my coffee for 10 minutes vs the recommended 4.
Milk or Milk Alternative – Choose something that will steam and froth so don’t get non-fat, 2%, or a milk alternative that won’t froth. Personally, I like oat milk, but macadamia milk would also be a great non-dairy alternative.
Milk Frother – The key here is to have a milk frother that also heats up the milk. The Nespresso milk frother is my favorite and has lasted me 4+ years, but for a more budget-friendly option, you can try Bodum.
Simple Syrup* Optional if you like it sweet. See Iced Brown Sugar Latte post for simple simple syrup recipe.
coffee cubes + hot steamed milk = a creamy, frothy, cold refreshing drink.
